Greetings friends! Today is Thanksgiving – one of my favorite holidays of the year. During my lifetime, Thanksgiving has been a time to get together with friends and family, watch football games and eat huge amounts of food – with a few beers thrown in for good measure. It’s been over the past ten years or so, that Thanksgiving has come to mean something much different for me. For me, today is a day to reflect on all of life’s blessings that I are so thankful for. To send up prayers to my God for all of the blessings he has given me. And lastly, to embrace my wife, kids, family and friends and let them know how thankful I am that they are part of my life.
It is important to understand the historical significance of important holidays. Thanksgiving, as we know it today, was set aside by President Abraham Lincoln as a “national” day of prayer and thanksgiving. Prescribed to be on the fourth Thursday of November, Lincoln’s Thanksgiving has survived over five generations and is still a national holiday. I would encourage you to read my article on Lincoln’s Thanksgiving Proclamation. It provides a more thorough examination of Thanksgiving.
From my family to yours, Happy Thanksgiving! I know I have much to be thankful for. Also, please keep our troops in your prayers today – so many of whom are half-a-world away from their families. If you see one our service members today, make sure to thank them.
“It is important to understand the historical significance of important holidays.”
Really? How so?
thanks
Jake,
The historical context of holidays helps us understand the circumstances and meaning of them. Most people think of Thanksgiving as being a day for turkey and football. It wasn’t for those reasons that Lincoln set aside the day.
