Too many people focus on the wars opening battles in the east (Bull Run, McCllelan's campaign in West Virginia). Grant showed the country that he could fight, as well as organize and train recruits. Not bad for a captain that resigned from the army in disgrace when stationed in California, far from his wife and loved ones. I look forward to reading more of your articles. I visited the site years ago. You have to take dirt roads to get to it and there was only a single plaque and map briefly describing the battle. I wish more were there.
