I just started reviewing David Work’s new book, “Lincoln’s Political Generals.” I’m about 75 pages into the book and find it fascinating. Last night, I came upon an interesting Lincoln quote that I’m not sure I’ve heard before.
Responding to a Republican governor who had requested a major general commission be granted to one of his citizens, Lincoln quickly responded, “…you must know that major-generalships in the regular army are not as plenty as blackberries.”(i) Upon reading this, I quietly chuckled to myself, imagining Lincoln’s jocular sarcasm while he wrote the note. I have read scores of books on Lincoln over the years and do not recall ever seeing this quoted. Have any of you seen it printed before?
Watch in the near future for a complete review on this book.
