Thank you for writing me. The most common Civil War rifle was the Springfield Model 1861 rifle musket. Additionally there were many Enfield rifle muskets used on both sides. Several brigades, including the famed Irish Brigade, preferred smooth bore muskets such as the Springfield Model 1842 in .69 caliber. As the war progressed, the Spencer repeating rifle became much more popular. Check out the following two articles/photo essays I have written on Civil War weapons.
